SiteGuard Server Edition: A Critical Flaw (CVE-2026-106931) Exploited to Gain Server Control
Hackers are exploiting a critical flaw (CVE-2026-106931) in SiteGuard Server Edition to execute commands with root or SYSTEM privileges. According to JPCERT/CC and the vendor, this vulnerability affects versions still used by hundreds of thousands of sites, including 500,000 on WordPress.org.

A Confirmed Critical Vulnerability Already Under Exploitation
The SiteGuard Server Edition firewall, used to protect over 1.5 million websites according to its publisher, contains an OS command injection vulnerability (CVE-2026-106931) that allows attackers to execute instructions with elevated privileges. This vulnerability, classified as critical by the vendor and the Japan’s CERT agency (JPCERT/CC), specifically targets the statistics functionality of hosted WAF instances, which is enabled by default.
A flaw in a firewall designed to protect servers becomes a major attack vector, granting hackers full system privileges.

Which Systems and Versions Are Affected?
The flaw affects versions 2.20 and later of SiteGuard Server Edition for Apache httpd, Nginx, and IIS (except FreeBSD), as well as versions 2.20 to 7.00 Update 6 for FreeBSD configurations. The IIS editions 3.10 to 4.00 Update 4 are not impacted. The vendor states that patches are available, including for end-of-life versions, but warns: updates may erase attack traces.
How Are Attackers Leveraging This Flaw?
Once the flaw is exploited, attackers gain SYSTEM (Windows) or root (Linux/FreeBSD) privileges, allowing them to take full control of the servers. According to JPCERT/CC and vendor alerts, this exploitation is already underway in the wild. Attackers target instances where the statistics functionality is enabled, which is the default setting. The vendor advises administrators to preserve diagnostic information before applying any fixes to retain forensic evidence.
What this changes here: risks for businesses and administrations in West Africa
Béninese and African organizations using SiteGuard Server Edition to secure their web infrastructures could see their systems compromised if they do not patch this vulnerability. With over 500,000 WordPress sites protected by this WAF according to the provider, local administrations, banks, and businesses relying on similar solutions should assess their exposure. A successful exploitation could allow attackers to access sensitive data or disrupt critical services. The provider’s recommendations (preserving logs before patching) also apply to local environments.
