Moonshot AI Launches Kimi K3.1 Pro: An Open-Weight Model with 2.8T/104B Parameters and a 1 Million-Token Context

Moonshot AI has announced the launch of Kimi K3.1 Pro, an open-weight AI model featuring 2.8 trillion total parameters and 104 billion active ones, with a context window of 1 million tokens. Available via API and dedicated platforms, this model positions itself as a direct competitor to proprietary models in key areas such as coding and agentic work.

Moonshot AI Launches Kimi K3.1 Pro: An Open-Weight Model with 2.8T/104B Parameters and a 1 Million-Token Context

An open-weight model optimized for performance and hallucination reduction

Kimi K3.1 Pro, developed by Moonshot AI, stands out with a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture combining 2.8 trillion total parameters and 104 billion active parameters, according to MarkTechPost. Compared to its predecessor, Kimi K3, this model incorporates techniques such as Kimi Delta Attention (KDA) and Attention Residuals (AttnRes), with 16 active experts out of 896 possible. A major advancement lies in the drastic reduction of hallucination rates, dropping from 23.4% to 8.3% on the Kimi Hallu Bench Hard, as indicated by the Moonshot team.

The model demonstrates competitive performance on technical benchmarks: it outperforms Claude Opus 5.5 on the SWE-Marathon (51.7% versus 46.3%), while lagging behind on offensive cybersecurity tasks, in line with Moonshot AI’s editorial choices. Cyber data was removed during training for the open-weight version, the same source notes.

Kimi K3.1 Pro reduces its hallucination rate to 8.3%, a significant improvement for applications where response accuracy is critical.

Enhanced capabilities for agentic work and large-scale data processing

Kimi K3.1 Pro positions itself as a tool suited for agentic tasks, according to kingy.ai. Its architecture, based on 93 layers and a Mixture of Experts approach, enables it to handle complex tasks requiring software tools and multi-step reasoning. The model supports a context window of 1,048,576 tokens, though restrictions may apply depending on commercial offerings. This capability could streamline the processing of large volumes of textual data or technical documents.

Moonshot AI also introduces an optimized version, Kimi K3.1 Pro Highspeed, included in its public API catalog. The model supports textual and visual inputs, with textual outputs, and features specific coding functionalities, as highlighted in the technical documentation cited by MarkTechPost.

A competitive positioning against proprietary models and a progressive availability

With an Intelligence Index of 55 on Artificial Analysis, Kimi K3.1 Pro ranks fourth among recent models, according to kingy.ai, ahead of its previous version (score of 44). Moonshot AI promises to release the open-weight weights as early as November 4, 2026, a date confirmed by both sources. The model is already accessible via platforms like Kimi API, Kimi.ai, Kimi Work, and Kimi Code, with OpenAI-compatible endpoints.

The Moonshot team notes that Kimi K3.1 Pro still lags in offensive cyber tasks, a limitation accepted to ensure the security and compliance of the open-weight version. This approach could reassure companies concerned about the ethical use of their AI tools.

What this changes here: opportunities for businesses and administrations in West Africa

For technology companies in Benin and West Africa, Kimi K3.1 Pro could offer a cost-effective and flexible alternative to proprietary models, particularly for applications requiring large volumes of data or complex processing. Its open-weight architecture would allow local developers to adapt the model to specific needs, such as analyzing administrative documents or managing technical databases, without relying on foreign infrastructure.

Administrations could also benefit from its extended context window to process lengthy legal cases or technical reports, while reducing errors related to hallucinations. However, the lack of cyber data in its training could limit its use in sensitive sectors like cybersecurity or defense, where specialized models remain essential.

The progressive availability of open-weight weights by November 2026 could accelerate innovation in local startups, provided that regional cloud infrastructures meet the model’s computational demands. Industry players will need to assess whether the performance gains justify the integration and maintenance costs.
